What is this tree?

A short guide for your first look at a Y-DNA tree.

What does a Y-DNA tree show?

It organizes Y-DNA results into branches that share an ancestor on the direct paternal line. Each named branch is a group linked through that shared ancestor. When a branch divides, the tree becomes more specific about that line.
Where does my result fit?

Your result belongs to one branch. People on that branch share a paternal-line ancestor with you; neighbouring branches join the tree through an earlier ancestor.
Does that mean we are related?

It indicates a genetic relationship through the paternal line, usually far back in time. The tree shows that connection; on its own, it does not describe a recent family relationship.
